18 years on
... still going very strong

A commemorative rose tower heralded
the birth of Gardens of Steel

Steel design and construction: Gardens of Steel P/L
A recent photograph of a project completed during our first year -
an arch and lattice panels to support a wisteria at the rear of a
Kew property.
The first of many wisterias we have been involved with.
On this occasion the finish was naturally rusted steel which will happily rust for very many more years.

Simple but just the ticket for Kew

Sometimes the smallest of projects give
the greatest pleasures.
The owner wanted to continue a rusted
steel theme to her front steps.
Many years ago Gardens of Steel had
reworked the back garden with rusted steel
wisteria supports - featured in our introduction item.

Recent Projects

Wrought iron for a Toorak beauty

Wrought iron gates, infills and fence panels for a National Trust listed 1930's Toorak property. All steel was hand painted in black, with emphasis on an aged patina.

Rusted steel complimenting an art deco treasure

A small motif in the original architectural brickwork, provided inspiration for all the
gates and letterbox of this art deco residence.
The stacked components are a feature of the era although generally in brickwork.
How brilliant in steel with all blind fixings.
All the gates were corten steel with framing in mild steel. The frames then oiled
to a delightful lustre.

A tiny gem in Moonee Ponds
Steel design and construction: Gardens of Steel P/L
One of our smallest custom projects.
The briefing was to replace an old timber pergola with a steel pergola, that would support the ancient vine forever.
The chosen finish was unpainted galvanised steel. The old brick fireplace is to be reinstated as a barbecue and will feature in this delightful and very productive backyard.

The gift of a new steel pergola
for the grand old lady of Hawthorn
A mixture of colonial and early Victorian, this National Trust property was completely renovated. The project included the additon of a steel pergola,
located over the entertainment area. The posts are original and were retrieved from a
renovated section of the building.

Stunning steel and views to die for at Studley Park

The black steel handpainted pergola
and extensive handrails give definition to this renovated 30's dwelling.
Laser cut brackets, deco style fittings and stacked feet were a feature of the concept.

Bali in Montrose

Six acres of stunning landscaping including vast water areas. A small bridge was required to connect
the central island. Emphasis was on clean joinery using laser cut brackets and fixing plates.

Steel pergola, lattice and planters for one of StKilda’s finest

Built in the 1860's, this Victorian beauty required a strong visual focus for its entertainment area. The steel pergola was one of our largest projects. The steel lattice softened the structural steel and would
support the clients beloved wisterias.
The laser cut stacked decals on the planters, reflect a feature of the original architecture. All pergola finishes were hand painted in the colour ‘monument’.
The five wall top planters were powdercoated in Dulux ‘monument’.

Bring on the pool side roses

A stunning design concept around this Mentone, bayside pool. Fourteen cantilleaved arches will gradually support climbing roses, ensuring both shade and privacy for the family. A combination of contemporary and traditional components were used in the construction with striking results. All steel was hand finished in black. We’ll watch this one with pride over its many evolving years.

“More than just a side gate”
Could there be a better way to present a delightfully
landscaped pool area at the rear of the property?
The client was insistent that this gate had to be
exciting, very welcoming and not your average side gate.
A laser cut panel with a radiating motif, proved to be just the solution.
All powder coated in sable black.

Mathematics and beautiful rust
As we often say ‘The mathematics goes a long way towards a
successful project’.
We were certainly put to the test with this project, as the client
is a mathematician with a passion for petals, as well as rusted steel.
What better for a corner concept in this made over sixties residence.
From an initial drawing on graph paper, we developed a delightful steel pergola - sweeping curves on different elevated levels, all locked together with laser cut decals.
At the very end this rusted steel beauty was oiled to a treat.
Just lovely!

As the clients insisted “we want the pool fence to be different, a feature in the landscape”.
The final result met the brief perfectly, The blades are rusted corten steel, with the rails and posts rusted mild steel and then oiled.
The rich browns come alive with the light and the angled blades produce stunning variations of shadow as the sun moves through the landscape.

A much loved space transformed for summer

“This is where our family and friends spend much of our free time together”.
This busy Lower Plenty family, chose a wrought iron concept, reflecting the Spanish style architecture of the residence.
Large planters were designed to soften the area.
A project which will evolve beautifully over the coming months, with climbers shortly to be in place and furniture to be re instated.
All in time for those glorious summer days.

It just had to be rusted

With red brick walls, stained red decking and red brick paving the choice was easy - a stunning rust concept.
Two Pergolas, a simple fence and gate to keep in, you guessed it, two red dogs.
The double posts and minimalist approach to the design married superbly with the low profile of the contemporary architecture.
A short time on from completion and the rusted steel has aged beautifully and the plantings are at their very best.
What a space and real triumph for this Glen Iris courtyard.

A year later and a little closer to Tuscany

The clients had experienced the delights of both Italy and the south of France.
Our brief was to bring some of these delights into a small Glen Iris backyard.
“It has to be rusted steel and allowed to age like a fine wine”. The grapes are now well on their way towards covering this very small four poster.
The fond memories of journeys abroad will live on forever.

Rust, rust and more rust

With the redevelopment of their small garden the Residents of this semi detached Victorian cottage were passionate about two things,
maples and rusted steel. A maple leaf cameo on the entrance gates welcomes the visitor and provides a little of what’s to come.

The two dwellings are separated by large laser cut maple leaf panels fitted to the contours of the wall, roof and pillars.
The cutout leaves provide wonderful shadows as well as intriguing glimpses of the surrounding sun drench maples.
